A surgical cutting head for use in infusion/aspiration devices for removing cataracts from the eye including an outer hollow shaft (2) surrounding an inner hollow shaft (3). The inner shaft has a sharpened notch (12) extending radially into the lumen of the inner shaft. The outer shaft has a projection guard (17) which extends radially inward to cover the end of the inner cutting shaft.
