<p>Improvements in the method and apparatus of vacuum deposition of highly reflective surface onto an aluminum base, including unanodized roll-polished aluminum. A coil of the aluminum (32) is disposed within the vacuum chamber (11), both as it unwinds in winding compartment (12) and as it rewinds in rewinding compartment (23). Water vapor is created by heating the aluminum web in an area located between unwinding compartment (12) and seal (14a). The water vapor generated is made available to other vacuum deposition processing compartments within the vacuum chamber including a glow discharge chamber (13) which is typically fueled by argon gas. A relatively thick layer of oxide is vacuum deposited onto an unanodized aluminum base as a substrate for the reflective surface.</p> |
