Impact protection, for posts, pipes and supports (esp. safety barrier fixing supports), consists of a soft enclosing shell having a hollow core which extends along its entire interior and which has dimensions corresp. to the cross-section of the support. The novelty is that the shell (2) is closed, except for a single slit (4) extending over its entire length and connecting the core space (3) with the exterior, and the slit (4) is located at the side opposite from the road. Pref. the shell (2) consists of plastics (esp. polypropylene and/or polyethylene) foam, pref. a flake composite foam. Pref. the core space (3) is offset outwardly away from the road side and has a double-T or sigma profile shape. Rigid plastic profiles may enclose the edges of the support (1) within the shell (2). A pref. cylindrical opening (5) extends along the entire length of the shell (2) at the opposite side of the core space (3) from the slit. USE/ADVANTAGE - To protect cyclists, vehicle passengers etc. against injury. The protective shell can be rapidly retro-fitted esp. to existing crash barrier supports.
