Reinforced mechanical belting comprises a flexible composition in which is embedded at least one reinforcement layer consisting of 2 sheets in side-by-side relationship each sheet being formed of parallel inextensible cords biased at an angle of 5 to 40 degrees with respect to the longitudinal axis of the belting, the bias angle of the cords of one sheet being in the opposite sense to that of the cords of the other sheet, and a binding layer superimposed on the reinforcement layer. As shown in Fig. 1 two reinforcement layers 2 and 3 of rubber coated steel cords 6 are embedded in a vulcanized rubber composition 11 so that the herring- bone configuration in layer 2 is opposed to that of layer 3, and a binding layer 9 also of rubber coated steel cords biased at an angle of 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the belting is interposed therebetween. The width of each of the sheets forming a reinforcement layer may be the same or different. The binding layer may extend from one edge of a reinforcement layer to a distance slightly greater than half the width of said layer, or two such binding layers may be provided, either on the same side or on opposite sides of the reinforcement layer and extending from opposite edges thereof, each binding layer being formed of parallel cords biased with respect to the longitudinal axis of the belting, the bias angle of the cords of one binding layer being in the opposite sense to that of the cords of the other layer. The flexible material may be vulcanized natural or synthetic rubber or plasticized polyvinyl chloride and the inextensible cords may be of steel or textile material. |
