Hydrocarbons having a methyl radical attached to an olefinically unsaturated carbon atom, an alkane having at least three carbon atoms or a methyl cycloalkane, are reacted in the vapour phase with oxygen and ammonia in the presence of a catalyst comprising a mixture of vanadium polyphosphate produced separately from and physically admixed with an oxide of Mo, Cu, W, Th, U, or Zr. Examples describe the preparation of the corresponding nitriles from propylene, 2-butene, 2-pentene, 2-methyl-2-butene, 2-hexene, 2-methyl 2-pentene, 3-methyl - 2 - pentene, 2:4 - hexadiene, 2:4-heptadiene, toluene, mixed xylenes, m-xylene, o-xylene, p-xylene, 1-phenylphopene, methyl-naphthalene and 1:4 - dimethylnaphthalene. Reaction is preferably effected at 300-650 DEG C.ALSO:Aminoxidation catalysts comprise a mixture of medium polyphosphate produced separately from and physically admixed with an oxide of Mo, Cu, W, Th, U or Zr. If desired more than one metal oxide may be included. Carriers on which such a catalyst may be supported are Al2O3, SiO2 and SiC. Additionally the catalyst may include an oxide of Li, Na or K. Examples are given which refer to catalyst particle size. |
