Hydrocarbon polymerization reactions are catalysed by a substantially anhydrous metal dihalide having a CdCl2 layer structure, selected from halides of Cd, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn and Mg, which has been reduced in particle size to a surface area of from 2 to 60 m2 per gm. under conditions which prevent substantial rehydration. Examples relate to the polymerization of n-heptane.ALSO:A substantially anhydrous metal dihalide of the type having the CdCl2 layer structure, selected from halides of Cd, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn and Mg (especially MgCl2) which is reduced in particle size to a surface area of 2 to 60 m.2 per gm., under conditions which prevent substantial rehydration, acts as a catlyst for polymerization and alkylation reactions. Reduction in particle size is achieved by mechanical means, e.g. by milling in an inert solvent or gas. The catalyst may contain hydroxyl ions up to an amount equal to that contained in 1% by weight of water. It may be modified by heating to at least 100 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere or high vacuum.ALSO:A catalyst, suitable for polymerisation and alkylation reactions of hydrocarbons, comprises a mixture of two or more metal chlorides having the CdCl2 layer structure and selected from halides of Cd, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn and Mg and especially MgCl2, which is reduced in particle size to a surface area of from 2 to 60 m2/gm, under conditions which prevent substantial rehydration. Reduction in particle size is achieved by mechanical means, e.g. by milling in an inert liquid or gas. The catalyst may be modified by heating to at least 100 DEG C in an inert atmosphere or high vacuum. A cocatalyst, e.g. an alkyl of a metal of Groups IIa and IIIa of the periodic table may also be used. Examples relate to the polymerisation of styrene and isobutene, the copolymerisation of isoprene with isobutene and the alkylation of toluene. |
