PURPOSE:To obtain a distinct colorant precursor excellent in mass productivity and stability uniform and transparent, and having a function as an adhesive by compounding a metal salt oxidizing agent with a hydrophobic high-molecular org. compd. in a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:A colorant precursor comprises at least a metal salt oxidizing agent and a hydrophobic high-molecular org. compd. in a wt. ratio of 1 to (5-1,000). The precursor is heated to give a colorant, which is a homogeneous dispersion of ultrafine metal particles having a sharp particle size distribution, has a surface plasmon absorption in the wavelength range of 300-750, and has a distinct color. The colorant may be formed on a substrate to obtain a colored substrate, or may be used as it is as a colored material. The colorant is produced very simply by heating only.
