PURPOSE: To provide a machining apparatus capable of efficiently adjusting highly precise machining without requiring any expensive constituting elements. CONSTITUTION: This machining apparatus comprises a boom 20 displaceable along spaced rails and a carriage 52 displaceable along the boom 20 perpendicularly to the displacement direction of the boom 20. A machining station 34 is adjustably supported on the carriage 52 by three adjustment means 62, to adjust a machine head such as a milling cutter, towards and away from a workpiece 12 disposed between the rails beneath the machining station 34. Variation in the level of the rails and/or the carriage 52 are measured by respective sensors 70 combined with respective adjustment means 62 which monitor references defined by a planer laser beam.
