<p>PURPOSE:To obtain the indole compound useful as a raw material for synthesizing perfumes and amino acids, etc., by reacting an aniline compound with an ethylene glycol compound in the presence of a catalyst in a gas phase, while the catalyst is washed with steam in the course of the reaction. CONSTITUTION:An aniline compound is reacted with an ethylene glycol compound in the presence of a catalyst containing the group Ib metal in the element periodic table (e.g. silver-carried SiO2) at 200-600 deg.C in a gas phase. During a period ranging from the starting time of the reaction to the regeneration time of the catalyst after the stoppage of the reaction, the supply of the aniline compound and the ethylene glycol compound are spontaneously stopped, and steam is charged into the reactor to wash the catalyst with the steam at 100-600 deg.C for 1min to 100hr. Since the lowering in the activity of the catalyst can be prevented and also since the deterioration of the catalyst during its reactivation can be prevented, the washing of the catalyst enables the long time continuous reaction and the long period using of the catalyst on the production of the indole compound.</p> |
