PURPOSE:To obtain a halogenophenoxy fatty acid derivative (some of which are new compounds) useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, chemicals, etc., in high yield without using catalyst, etc., by halogenating a specific phenoxy fatty acid with a halogenation agent. CONSTITUTION:A halogenophenoxy fatty acid derivative of formula II (Y is halogen) (some of which are new compounds), e.g. 2-chloro-4- fluorophenoxyacetonitrile, can be produced by selectively halogenating a phenoxy fatty acid of formula I [R is cyano, CON(R<3>)R<4> (R<3> and R<4> are H, alkyl, phenyl or benzyl or R<3> and R<4> together form alkylene) or COAR<5> (R<5> is H, alkyl, phenyl or benzyl; A is 0 or S); R<1> and R<2> are H or alkyl; X is halogen or alkyl] in the presence of a halogenation agent (especially preferably chlorination agent). In the compounds of formula II, the compounds of formula III shown in the table are new compounds.
