LIGHT-TRANSMISSIVE BARIUM FLUORIDE SINTERED COMPACT AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE:To obtain a polycrystal light-transmissive BaF2 sintered compact having high strength, purity and density and no cleavage by hot-pressing a high-purity fine BaF2 powder in vacuum to highly densify the powder and then subjecting the powder to HIP. CONSTITUTION:A barium fluoride powder having >=98.5% purity and <=6mum average particle diameter is hot-pressed and sintered in vacuum at 500-800 deg.C and 100-500kg/cm<2> pressure and densified to >=95% of the theoretical density ratio. The powder is then subjected to HIP at 600-1250 deg.C and >=400kg/cm<2> pressure, and a light-transmissive barium fluoride sintered compact is obtained. The compact has an excellent linear transmittance in the IR region of 8-11mum wavelength. Meanwhile, CIP and atmospheric-pressure sintering are applied instead of hot-press sintering and HIP, and an inexpensive light-transmissive barium fluoride sintered compact with the light transmittance slightly deteriorated is produced.
