The winch control system includes a portable remote control box (15) carried by the operator (22). Two transmitters (16,17) are connected in parallel to the control box, and each transmits over a hemispherical region. The transmitters and the box are carried by a harness (21) worn by the operator. The control box includes two hand operated levers (26,27). Commands derived from these controls are transmitted from the two transmitters and detected by receivers on the ship. The transmitters and receivers may operate with infrared radiation, with the beams suitably inclined to ensure their alignment. ADVANTAGE - Operator may move about on deck whilst controlling ship's winches.
