PURPOSE:To embody a display screen having high luminance without using a polarizing plate, and also, to provide a diffraction grating in a liquid crystal layer so that an image display of high contrast can be embodied. CONSTITUTION:On a counter electrode 15, a diffraction grating 16 is formed. Also, on the counter electrode 15 in the upper part of a source signal line 14, a thin film 18 is formed. A ratio d/p of height (d) and a pitch (p) of the diffraction grating 16 is set to >=1/3. When a voltage is applied to a picture element electrode 13, a refractive index (n) of a high molecular dispersion liquid crystal 17 becomes an ordinary light refractive index no. When this no and a refractive index nk of the diffraction grating 16 are allowed to coincide with each other in advance, when a voltage is applied to the liquid crystallayer 17, the diffraction grating is annihilated. When a voltage is not applied to the picture element electrode 13, the refractive index (n) of the high molecular dispersion liquid crystal 17 is shown by about (2no+ne), when an abnormal refractive index of the liquid crystal is denoted as ne, a refractive index difference is generated between the refractive index nk of the diffraction grating 16 and the liquid crystal layer 17, and light which is made incident on the liquid crystal panel is diffracted. |
