A method of shearing a billet of steel with alpaha-gamma transformation comprises shearing the billet at a temperature of 400-650‹ C. after structural transformation of the steel has been caused by interrupted or retarded cooling from rolling heat, whereby a roomtemperature strength below 85 kg/mm.<SP>2</SP> of the steel is obtained. Cooling may take place to 550‹ C. and take not less than thirty minutes, e.g. 45-60 minutes, to reduce the temperature from 650‹ C. to 550 ‹ C. Steels with a carbon content higher than 0À6 % are sheared at temperatures approaching 650‹ C., those with lower C. content are sheared at temperatures approaching 400 ‹C. In an example, the steel had 0À44% C., 1% Cr and 0À2% Mo and a rolled billet at 890‹ C. was produced which, at 650‹ C., was fed into a furnace. After 50 minutes the billet was delivered by rolls to-the shears and divided at 400-600‹ C.</p>
