A railway ballast tamping tool 10 is mounted on a bell-crank lever 1 pivoted at 2 on rigid member 3, the other pivot of the lever 1 being connected to a jack 7 the other end of which is also pivoted to the member 3 such that the tool may be advanced towards the sleeper 13 or raised to a withdrawn position. the rigid member 3 being vibrated for packing and vertically adjustable. Vibrations in the member 3 are produced by an eccentric shaft 19 and connecting rod 20 which rock the member about a pivot 15. the member 16 carrying the pivot 15 and shaft 19 being vertically adjustable on a slide 18. In modifications the jack is replaced by a motor driven screw and nut mechanism and the pivots 2 and 15 may be concentric. Two packing tool assemblies may be mounted face to face on a single rigid member which is vibrated.</p> |
