The novel compound 7(p-dimethylaminobenzyl)-1,3 -dimethylxanthine and its acid addition and quaternary salts are prepared by reaction of theophylline and a p-dimethylaminobenzyl halide, optionally followed by quaternarization or salt formation. p-Dimethylaminobenzyl chloride is prepared by action of HCI on p-dimethylaminobenzyl alcohol which is obtained by reduction of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde.ALSO:Therapeutic compositions having use as a respiratory analeptic, a cardiotonic, a coronary vaso-dilator and a diuretic, in conventional form for oral or endorectal administration, comprise 7-(p-dimethylamino-benzyl) 1,3-dimethylxanthine or an acid addition or quaternary ammonium salt thereof and a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier, optionally together with one or more other active substances, e.g. barbituries or diuretics, such as phenyl ethyl malonylurea, theobromine, phenobarbital and valerian, or with ephedrine or antihistamines or with papaverine or trimetrine or with cardiotonic glucosides or with sparteine or quinidine or with cholagogues and choleretics or aspirin.
