Productivity increasing soil improving compsn. - contg. cellulose or deriv., water retaining agent and binder, e.g. sawdust, polyacrylate and bentonite

Soil improving compsn. contains: (A) cellulose, cellulose deriv. and/or cellulose-contg. or cellulose-derived material; (B) a water-retaining agent; and (C) a binder. The compsn. pref. has particle size 1-10 (esp. 2-7) mm and pref. contains 10-70 wt. % (A), 10-70 wt. % (B) and 2-50 wt. % (C). ADVANTAGE - The compsn. improves the water retention and productivity of soil. A wide range of waste or recycled materials (e.g. from agriculture or the wood, paper or food industries) can be used as (A). In an example, bentonite (56g) and "Laponite" (RTM; thixotropic agent) (7g) were suspended in water with rapid stirring The suspension was filtered through 500g of sawdust until a clear filtrate was obtd. The filter cake was pressed to remove most of the water content, broken up into ca. 7mm particles and mixed with 60g of particulate polyacrylate (superabsorbent). The mixt. was dried at 80 deg.C and sieved to give a ready-for-use prod. of mean particle size ca. 7mm. Fines (below 2mm) were recycled to the pressing stage.
