The engine (1A) draws air through a filter (4A) in proportion to the throttle opening (5A), and the combustion prods. are expelled through an exhaust pipe (6A) and catalytic converter (7A). Until the coolant has attained a preset temp. the control unit (22A) allows a pump (21A) to drive air through an open valve (10A), a non-return valve (11A) and an electric heater (12A) into the exhaust pipe. The idling speed controller is activated to give a high speed while the warm-up is in progress, and the alternator is driven to supply more power for the heater. ADVANTAGE - Exhaust catalytic converter is warmed-up rapidly after starting, without excessive consumption of energy.
