The present invention relates to a process for producing at least sprayproof seams for joining two flat items by means of a sealing strip (1) having storage chambers (3) which are filled with a sealing compound or a material which is activable to form a sealing compound. The sealing strip (1) is laid between the flat items to be sewn together and the sealing compound in the storage chambers (3) is released by pressure through its opening wall (10), whereby the sealing compound is applied between the flat items and is pressed towards the sewn seam without the sewing machine needle's contacting the sealing compound. Further embodiments of the invention concern sealing strips made like double-sided adhesive foil with the difference that the sealing compound in substrate coatings or in microcapsule form is activated only after sewing so that the needle is not contaminated during sewing.
