A machine tool for making the inner race members of rolling bearings comprises a frame 15 having a front face 16 which supports a plurality of cutting tools on slide assemblies 18-21 which are operable by respective cams and levers 22-30 in a controlled sequence to facilitate the removal of stock from a workpiece S mounted in the chuck on the rotary spindle of the machine. Slide assembly 18 carries a boring tool 44 mounted for movement longitudinally of the machine spindle on slide 37 and a rough turning tool 53 mounted on slides 39a and 50 for longitudinal and transverse movement, respectively, the slides being actuated by a bellcrank 55, cam 67 and levers 61, 64 and 70 so as to produce controlled simultaneous movement of the tools 44 and 53. The initial machining of the workpiece is carried out by the tools 44 and 53 by which the maximum amount of material is removed from the workpiece and the initial conical forming is effected. The operation of the slide assembly 19 is then initiated whereby forming tool 83 and facing tool 84 mounted on slide block 81 are fed simultaneously transversely to the workpiece to effect the finished forming operation. Slide assembly 20 is then actuated which carries a breakdown tool 95 in a slide 90 and a relieving tool 105 pivotally mounted on a slide 98 by means of links 101- 103 so as to effect a slight rocking action to accomplish the relieving operation, the relieving and breakdown operations being effected simultaneously. Finally the slide assembly 21 is actuated and which carries a parting-off tool so that the finished race member can be parted off from the stock and the cycle of operations recommenced. A draw bar feeds the stock through the machine spindle up to a stock stop after each operation cycle. The stages of the machining operation are set out in Figs. 8 to 11 (not shown). |
