The control shaft of an automatic lathe is driven from an auxiliary shaft coupled by a first clutch to a driving shaft and to manual operating means by a second clutch, the two clutches being interconnected for the engagement of one only at a time. The auxiliary shaft 30, which drives the control shaft of the lathe through gear 28, may be driven by a belt 36 through an electromagnetic clutch 40 or by a hand wheel 37 (for toolsetting) through a dog clutch 42 operated by a solenoid 52, and may be stopped by an electromagnetic brake 55. After closure of a main switch 73, closure of a control switch 87 energizes a driving motor and a relay S which closes a holding switch S1, clutch energizing switch SIII and brake hold-out switch SIV and opens a time relay 2 and clutch switch SV, thus allowing power drive of the shaft 30. Opening the main switch de-energizes the relay S to release the clutch 40, engage the brake 55 and engage the clutch 42; at the same time the time relay Z is energized to close a switch ZI which releases the brake 55 after a short interval and allows manual rotation of the shaft 30. The shaft may be power driven for toolsetting by operation of a switch 77 which is independent of the holding switch SI. |
