A periodically (discontinuously) operating kiln, for firing in particular rod-shaped ceramic parts, has the kiln ceiling (16) removable from the side walls (14) of the kiln, a number of tie rods (36) extending down (in the direction of the kiln chamber) from the kiln ceiling (16), and holding means (42) extending between adjacent tie rods (36), on which to suspend the parts to be fired. In this kiln the need for kiln furniture is reduced to a minimum. The kiln furniture only consists of the tie rods and the holding means braced between the tie rods. In this manner, only a very small amount of kiln furniture is heated up and cooled down during the firing process. Thus the energy consumption can be reduced by at least 20%. Furthermore, the preparation (charging) of the kiln is substantially simplified.

|
