PURPOSE: To dispense with limitation of material of a display electrode and enhance the lifetime of a plasma display panel by maintaining electric discharge through not the display electrode but maintaining electrodes provided independently. CONSTITUTION: An upper plate 10 and a lower plate 13 are provided opposite to each other. A plurality of anodes 11 and a plurality of partition walls 1.2 are attached to the front face of the upper plate 10. A first maintaining electrode 14 is formed at the back face of the lower plate 13. A plurality of cathodes 16 are mounted on the first maintaining electrode 14. A dielectric 15 is adapted to insulate the contact faces between the first maintaining electrode 14 and the plurality of cathodes 16. The plurality of cathodes 16 are connected to respective capacitors via common nodes, and consequently, are used as second maintaining electrodes. A displaying function is performed by the anodes 11. A discharge maintaining function is not performed through not the anodes 11 but the maintaining electrodes 14, 16. Therefore, it is unnecessary to limit material of the anode 11 for the purpose of displaying stability.
