Quantitative assessment of dustbins emptied by disposal undertaking - leads to regular rendering of accounts based on numbers of bins identified by data acquisition from bar=code labels

Each dustbin (1) carries a bar code label (2) identifying uniquely either the bin itself or the premises from which it is collected. Before the contents are removed, the label is read by a portable scanner (3) linked to a data acquisition unit (4). At the end of each day the data are transferred via a transmission station (5) and modem (6) to a centre (7). Periodically the numbers of bins collected from each household or undertaking are printed out (8) for the prepn. of accounts (9). USE/ADVANTAGE - With refuse from private, commercial or public premises, charges can be levied on basis of quantities actually collected for disposal, instead of at fixed rate.
