To dispose of electrical storage heaters, containing asbestos, the appliance is fully immersed in liquid, with a hermetically sealed zone above the liquid level to trap any asbestos fibres or particles caught in air rising out of the appliance as air bubbles. The air, together with any asbestos material, is extracted from the zone by suction. A liquid container (1) is provided with a cover (4) over the air zone (3) over the liquid level (2). The cover seals the air zone hermetically against the ambient environment. The cover (4) is fitted with a system (5-7) to extract air and asbestos from the air zone (3). The suction action on the air in the container starts simultaneously with the flooding of the container, and is continued after the interior of the appliance has been flooded and the liquid level is still. The suction system has a suction unit (5) with a suction hose (6) leading to a connection (7) at the cover (4). The cover (4) has a non-return air feed flap (9) and a tightly-sealed opening (10) for access. A viewing window (11) is at the container (1) or cover (4). The cover (4) can be removed from the container (1). ADVANTAGE - Safe disposal of appliance, without risk of asbestos escape into environment.
