In long welded rails which give the benefits of reduced noise and vibration under traffic, the risk of displacement due to thermal expansion which could threaten a train with derailment is reduced by the provision of a gap in the head of the rail at an angle of 60 to 70 deg. to the direction of running. The number of such gaps per unit length of track is worked out in accordance with the variation of temp. to be expected. ADVANTAGE - Higher standard of safety can be attained through electronic monitoring of expansion joints in addn. to customary gauge checks.
