The machine has a wheel body with a central aperture, a mounting shaft, an encoder for measuring the angle of rotation of the mounting shaft about its central axis, sensors mounted adjacent to two different points on the mounting shaft, a tyre compression device, a wheel body mounting mechanism, a tyre removal and application device (18,19), a wheel body rotation mechanism and a computer. The computer receives the output signals of the encoder and of the two sensors and derives the imbalance of the wheel body. The vertical mounting shaft has a mechanism for engaging and decoupling it from the mechanism for rotating the wheel.
