The subscriber unit includes a telephone and a sound memory (14) triggered by an alarm signal. The output of the sound memory is connected to a loud speaker (21). Any sound signals, e.g. speech or music, input to the memory by the subscriber can thus be output acoustically over the line upon actuation by an alarm signal. The memory is erasable and has at least one sound/speech input (16,17). A connection circuit (5) is arranged between branch line contacts (3,4) on one side and the memory and telephone contacts (1,2) on the other. The connection circuit includes an alarm signal detector (7) and an off-hook detector (8). When an alarm signal is detected, the memory outputs a sound signal via the loud speaker. On detection of an off-hook signal, the output is stopped.
