A catalytic converter housing (1) has a funnel-shaped end-section (5), a monolithic catalytic body (3) supported by an expanded mat (2) within the housing (1), and an inner funnel (7) close to the end-section (5). The end of the inner funnel (7) adjacent to the catalytic body (3) rests on the housing (1) to overlap the expanded mat (2), while the opposite end of the inner funnel (7) is able to move back and forth to compensate for heat contraction and expansion of the housing (1). The novelty is that the inner funnel (7) adjacent to the catalytic body (3) is secured solely by pressure exerted by the expanded mat (2), so that the end of the inner funnel (7) adjacent to the catalytic body can overcome the pressure exerted by the expanded mat (2) and move. USE/ADVANTAGE - The assembly is a catalytic exhaust gas converter for automotive use. The arrangement reduces damage to the inner funnel as a result of expansion and contraction resulting from temp. change.
