A delay/adding unit delays corresp. reception signals and adds delayed signals, in order to produce an added signal, which gives a focus, which is shifted sequentially in the subject. A delay time control unit controls corresp. delay times of the reception signals in the delay/adding unit. An indicator unit indicates a tomographic image of the subject coinciding with the added signal which is given by the delay/adding unit. The delay time control unit controls the delay/adding unit, so that corresp. reception signals can be delayed adaptively at corresp. delay times. These times are specified for a number of ultrasonic converters in coincidence with a focus position. The focus position is shifted sequentially, corresp. to the array-positions of a number of the ultrasonic converters. Also for a time period from a point of time, the ultrasonic waves are transmitted by the ultrasonic converters. ADVANTAGE - Improves delay control. Facilitates forming of suitable position focal points even if scan aperture is enlarged. Can easily absorb irregularities of sonic speed and time lag, to ensure high resolution tomographic images.
