A winding shaft with individual self-gripping winding elements (6) for winding cores drivably mounted on it is described, the winding cores each containing a flexible gripping device in an annular groove (14) of each individual winding element, the outside diameter of the said gripping device being greater than the inside diameter of the winding cores. The gripping device consists of a plurality of cylindrical ring-shaped segments (2) arranged in the annular groove on the circumference of the individual winding element, the end surfaces (13) of the said segments (2) being bevelled and being mounted so as to be radially displaceable on the inside surface of the spacers (3), a spring element fitting between the inside of the segments and the floor of the annular groove, the said spring element consisting either of one leaf spring (4) or a plurality of helical springs (15) with ball thrust elements (17). <IMAGE>
