<p>PURPOSE:To obtain a tetralin compound, having the tetrahydronaphthalene ring and benzene ring through ester bond, a large tilt angle and excellent liquid crystal performance, capable of manifesting a smectic phase within a wide temperature range and useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystal material, etc. CONSTITUTION:1,2,3,4-Tetrahydro-6-hydroxynaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid is made to react with benzyl bromide in the presence of sodium iodide to introduce benzyloxy group into the 6-position. The resultant reactional product is then allowed to react with hydroquinone monodecyl ether to remove the protecting group at the 6-position. The obtained compound is subsequently made to react with 4-(R-2'-octyloxy)benzoic acid in the presence of a condensing agent to afford the objective tetralin compound, expressed by formula I [R is 3-20C alkyl; X is OCO, O or single bond; n is 0 or 1; either of groups A<1> and A<2> is a group expressed by formula II and the rest is phenylene, biphenylene, etc.; Y<1> and Y<2> are COO, OCO, CH2CH2, etc.; A<3> is the group expressed by formula II, phenylene, etc.; Z is O, OCO or single bond; R* is C*H(CF3)C6H13 or C*H (CH3)C6H13].</p> |
