A class of 2-aryl-5,6-ring-fused pyrimidines which is useful in the control of weeds is of the general formula: wherein Ar is an optionally substituted aromatic or heteroaromatic ring; R3 is an alkynyl or alkoxyalkyl group, -R5-R6- is a fused ring moiety bonded to the pyrimidine ring at the 5 and 6 positions; and X is oxygen or sulfur.
