A nonkeratinous glycoprotein is: present on the apicolateral face and absent on the basal face of the basal cells of the epidermis of an animal or mammal, including psoriatic and papillomatrous basal cells; present in man in the oesophagus, ureter, and, to a lesser degree, stomach, colon, and small intestine epithelial tissues (other than skin); present, in an unpolarized manner, in the basocellular carcinona and spinocellular carcinoma pathological cells and absent on melanoma and naevus cells; and absent from the surface of the basal cells of the epidermis in the rabbit and mouse; and which is recognized by the antibody secreted by the hybrid cell line BC2. The invention further includes an analogue, fragment or synthetic or semisynthetic peptide containing a peptide sequence present in the said protein, or a derivative of the fragment or peptide, provided that the analogue, fragment, peptide or derivative is recognized by the said antibody. The glycoprotein has a molecular weight of 165 Kilodaltons as determined by PAGE. The hybrid cell line BC2 has been deposited.
