A work clamping device for use with a drill press comprises clamping means 22 attached by a split socket 23 to the pillar 10 of a drill press and a clamping arm 20 having fingers 80 for bearing on a workpiece 18, the device including resilient deformable means for applying a resilient pressure to the workpiece. The clamping device 22 comprises an annular case 70, having ratchet teeth (72), (Fig. 5, not shown), that engage pawls (60) operated by a fixed cam (50) when handle 67 is rotated and eccentrics (64) move a pair of rotatable discs (54), (56) on which the pawls are mounted. In operation, moving handle 67 anti-clockwise unlocks the ratchet and clamping arm 20 is moved manually on to the workpiece. Moving the handle clockwise engages the ratchet and forces the arm 20 on to the workpiece. In the embodiment described pads (35), (Fig. 2, not shown), of rubber or other resilient material are positioned in a channel (32) to provide resilience between the clamping means 22 and the split socket 23. A resilient bush may be used instead of pads and the resilience may be provided at any position within the device between the workpiece 18 and the pillar 10. |
