The flow rate of gas coolant through a reactor core channel is determined by a removable element of predetermined dimensions situated at one end of the channel to produce the desired throttling effect. The flow rate is altered by using the fuel handling machine (not shown) to remove the element and replace it by another element having a different throttling effect. As shown, the element consists of a sleeve 5 having a throttling aperture 10 of predetermined size and retained by spring blade pawls 12 carried by a helical member 4 situated in a tube extension 2 of the reactor core channel, the member 4 being the innermost one of a train of members 4, 6, 7, 8 locked in the tube extension. The gas coolant enters through a pipe 9 and flows to the reactor core in the direction F 1 , F 3 . To change the sleeve 5 the fuel handling machine is coupled to the end 3 of the tube 2 and the train 4, 6, 7, 8 is withdrawn and inserted into a lead-shielded dummy channel (Fig. 3, not shown) where the pawls 12 are automatically released. The fuel handling machine withdraws the train from the dummy channel to leave behind the sleeve 5 and then inserts the train into a further dummy channel containing another sleeve with an aperture of different size, the pawls 12 automatically coupling on to this sleeve (Fig. 4, not shown). Finally, the fuel handling machine returns to the train to the tube 2.
