The data circulates in a given direction around the loop. At least one of the inputs (E1,E2,E3) at each link (20) comes from the previous link. The inputs are prioritised w.r.t. the input corresp. to the furthest upline link or w.r.t. the information read at the inputs. Each piece of information has a link number relating to its origin to test the information on input by comparing with the same information presented to the other inputs. Inputs to the nth link came from the (n-1)th, (n-2)th and perhaps the (n-3)th links output. An alternative uses two link outputs. ADVANTAGE - Highly secure interconnection, and flexible degree of security. Can test system from single link and central recording of anomalous test readings.
