PURPOSE:To absorb the fluctuation of an image pickup system and to stably detect an edge from a picture. CONSTITUTION:A direction dispersion processing means 39 calculates direction dispersion on brightness distribution with brightness which is uniformly sampled as a weight in a polar coordinate system where the center of respective local areas constituting an input picture as an original point. When direction dispersion calculated in the direction dispersion processing means 39 is smaller compared with direction dispersion which is previously calculated for an edge pattern, the edge is judged to exist in a notice local area. the edge of the input picture is detected by repeating the processing for the whole input picture. |
