OPTICAL-FIBER INTERCONNECTION TO STRIP WAVEGUIDE

PURPOSE: To connect a waveguide which is supported on a substrate to an optical fiber by using glass. CONSTITUTION: A glass material which fuses at temperature lower than temperature that a waveguide 34 can be heated safely is supplied to both or one of an optical fiber and the waveguide, and the glass material is heated to connect the optical fiber to the waveguide 34. The feature is that thermal insulation is present in the substrate 26 where the waveguide 34 is mounted since end parts of respective waveguides 34 and the substrate 26 below them are thermally separated from the parts of adjacent waveguides 34 and the substrate 26 below them. When heat is applied for the connection, the heat conduction from one waveguide area to an adjacent waveguide area along the end part of the substrate 26 is limited to obtain the thermal insulation.
