The evaporator is buried in the ground outside a house, and has two hair pin loops, one vertical (15) and the other horizontal (14). The vertical loop is situated between the expansion valve (13) and the horizontal loop, or alternately between the horizontal loop and the compressor (11). In an alternative configuration the horizontal and vertical loops are connected in parallel, and valves allow selection of which loop is used at any time. ADVANTAGE - Combines benefits of faster response to external temperature of horizontal loop with reduced sensitivity of vertical loop.
