The measuring device uses a polychromatic X-ray source (20) and a detector array (D) for measuring the dispersed X-rays, on opposite sides of a feed path for the examined baggage (25). A primary stop plate (21) blocks the central part of the X-ray cone (28) from reaching the examination zone (25) with a secondary stop plate in the path of the X-rays to the detector array (D), incorporating imaging slits (S1,S2) enclosing the system axis.Each slit (S1,S2) allows only the radiation from part of the examination zone (25) to be received by the detector array (D), each detector element responding to radiation with a precisely defined dispersion angle. The examination zones do not overlap.
