An alternative method of recording data on tape as angled tracks is provided by a head unit (1) caused to move along a linear path by being mounted on a carriage. The carriage is fixed to the surface of a tensioned steel tape (8) that passes around a pair of rollers (9,10). The head is coupled to a modulated optical source (27) providing data input signals to be recorded. The carriage is moved to a reference position and is moved accurately along the angled track. More than one head and carriage unit may be mounted on the steel tape. The magnetic tape moves in synchronism. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides high energy recording density. Non-contact. Relatively high speed. Used for video recording.
