A heating element of composite material has a gap (11) between at least two parallel webs (10) of electrically conductive fibre-reinforced plastics and has, at the web ends, a connecting cross-piece (10a) of the same material and with the same volume resistivity. Pref. the composite material contains woven carbon fibres or carbonised synthetic fibres. The heating element (10) consists of carbon fibres or carbonised synthetic fibres, impregnated with resin, such as epoxy, silicone of furan resin, or a water glass binder to form a prepreg which is dried and then hardened by hot pressing at about 500 N/sq.cm. The product is stamped or cut to form the webs and crosspieces. Alternatively, the crosspieces (10a) may consist of metal. The heating element may be covered with plates of glass fibre-reinforced plastics. USE/ADVANTAGE - The heating element is useful for various applications such as hot plates, heating drums for paper and textile processing, heating of electroplating baths and chemical equipment, in the food, automobile, aircraft and building industries and in domestic equipment. It provides high heating power at low current consumption, provides precise temp. holding (within 5 deg.C), heats up and cools rapidly, has a modular construction, can be controlled by sensors and programme control, has high flexibility for conforming to shaped surfaces, is unbreakable and is moisture and corrosion resistant.
