A polyphenylene ether resin composition comprising as the major components: (a) 100 parts by weight of polyphenylene ether resin, and (b) 1 - 30 parts by weight of a hydrocarbon resin which has a softening point of 140 - 180C and a ratio of weight-average molecular weight to number-average molecular weight Mw/Mn of 2.0 or less, and is prepared by polymerizing a raw material oil of hydrocarbon in which a total content of indene and methylindene is 80% by weight or more by the use of a Friedel-Crafts type catalyst. m
