A superconducting current limiting apparatus includes a first container (6), a superconducting current limiting element (5) accommodated in the first container (6), a refrigerant (N) filling the first container (6) for cooling the superconducting current limiting element (5) accommodated in the first container (6), a second container (7) for accommodating the first container (6) in such a manner that the first container is heat insulated, and a conductor (12a, 12b) for connecting the superconducting current limiting element (5) to an external power supply system. Such a superconducting current limiting apparatus can be used to limit a short-circuit current. It can be incorporated in a short circuit controlling superconducting system.
