Sulphur is removed from fluid coke containing volatile in excess of 3% by reacting the volatiles contained in the coke with the sulphur contained in the coke, said reaction being carried out in the absence of the addition of gases containing free hydrogen, and the reaction conditions being such that at least 2% of the volatiles in the coke are retained therein until the sulphur content has been reduced to at least 2%. In a preferred embodiment (see Figure), coke is ground and mixed with a binder and recovered distillate, formed into briquettes and heated for 12 hours at 750 DEG C. The volatiles and hydrogen sulphide are passed through a condenser wherein part of the volatiles are condensed and fed back to the briquetting <PICT:0936889/III/1> stage, the gases are then scrubbed of H2S and used to maintain the temperature of the reactor. The coke briquettes are then calcined at a temperature of 1100 DEG C. The sulphur content can be lowered from 5% to 1,4% or even lower. |
