PURPOSE:To prepare the title compound which is useful as a raw material of an epoxy resin hardener, etc., in high yield in one step, by the hydroformylation of dicyclopentadiene under specific reaction conditions, using a cobalt compound and a phosphine as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Tricyclodecanedimethylol is prepared is high yield in one step by the hydroformylation of dicyclopentadiene under such a reaction condition that the value of F defined by the formula is <=5, using a cobalt compound and a phosphine as a catalyst. On that occasion, a) satulated hydrocarbons and/or aromatic hydrocarbons, or b) hydrocarbons which are inactive to said reaction and/or <=8C alcohols are used as a reaction solvent. The a) solvents are removed by cooling while b) are extracted with an extracting solvent comprising organic polar solvents, which are not completely miscible with said solvents, and water, whereby the desired product can be easily separated from the reaction solvent containing the catalyst, and moreover, a reaction solvent layer can be recycled to said reaction system and reused. |
