PURPOSE:To provide a compact light crew restricting device for automobile capable of expanding an energy absorbing stroke to provide soft restricting performance by setting a limit line determined by a face position of an occupant to an air bag mounting position and controlling a shift mechanism so that the tip of the air bag does not exceeds the limit line in a developing process. CONSTITUTION:A control section 7 receives a signal from a diagnosing circuit 45 to output an ignition signal to an inflator 15 of an air bag 1. The ignition signal is outputted to a shift mechanism 5 after a specified time elapses since the beginning of expansion of the air bag 1 to ignite powder 27, extend a piston rod 33 and shift an upper column 9 in the direction of contracting a steering column 3. The control section 7 adjusts a valve 39 to adjust the shift speed of the upper column 9 such that the axial length of the air bag 1 is less than a distance between a steering wheel 11 and the face of an occupant and approximately equal to the distance in the largest axial length and the upper column 9 is stopped before the largest axial length. |
