[Also in Division F1] NH 3 is made in a process comprising (a) continuous primary reforming of hydrocarbons with steam under pressure in externally heated catalyst-filled tubes followed by (b) secondary catalytic adiabatic reforming of the gaseous product under pressure with air or oxygenenriched air followed by (c) one or more supplementary steps for modification of the composition of the gaseous product and removal of impurities followed by (d) the catalytic synthesis of NH 3 under pressure from the resulting H 2 + N 2 mixture, wherein (e) the hot O 2 -containing exhaust gases from one or more turbines are used for the combustion of fuel for the external heating of the catalyst tubes of the primary reforming step (a). Steam driven turbines may supply compressed process air to the secondary reforming stage and/or compress the NH 3 synthesis gases and/or compress the NH 3 produced prior to liquefaction. Preferably, however, gas turbine driven compressor(s) are used for the provision of air to the secondary reforming stage and steam-driven compressors are used for the compression of the synthesis gas for the recycling of the synthesis gas and for refrigeration operations. Gas turbines may be used for the latter purposes also. Steam driven compressors may be used to compress the hydrocarbon feedstock. |
