The connector (20) is surrounded by a slidable ring (30) which is biassed towards a base end of the connector by a spring (4). The end of the connector which faces the instrument body (10) includes an internally-bevelled collar (33) whose angle of bevelling is determined as a function of the dimension of the sliding ring. Longitudinal movement of the ring brings the bevelled portions of the collar into contact with balls (23) projecting through the walls of the connector, to press them inwardly against the force of a biassing spring (22). The balls bear against locking jaws (21) to retract them and allow connection or disconnection of the instrument. ADVANTAGE - Rapid, simple-action connector, with operation unlikely to distract operator from patient.
